A high column erected at the entrance to a temple or a shrine in Buddhist and Vedic Hindu tradition. Such columns bear flags or banners and were also used as a military standard in South Asia. Variations of the tradition can be found in Tibetan architecture. From the Sanskrit word dhvaja, meaning “banner” or “flag.”
