In Hindu temples, it is the platform used to install idols inside the garbhagriha or innermost sanctum of the shrine. In the case of the Shiva-linga, it is also known as the pitha or pedestal upon which the linga is installed. In Sanskrit, the word means “stool” or “pedestal.”
