Vedika

Vedika

An outer railing around a sacred monument or object in Buddhist and Hindu architecture. Constructed around sacred trees, mounds or stupas, they usually contain inscriptions carved in low relief, depicting protective deities, mythological events and other religious iconography. The space within the vedika was usually used for circumambulation by devotees. From the Sanskrit vedika, meaning “square railing.”
