Vihara

Vihara

A Buddhist monastery that was an integral part of early Buddhist cave temples in India since the second century BCE. It usually comprised an open court, multiple residential cells and a porch at the entrance. Initially serving as places of rest for wandering monks, these evolved into centers of learning, such as Nalanda in India and the Shalban vihara in Bangladesh. Derives from Sanskrit, meaning “a form of leisurely wandering or passing the time.”
